Steven Dick Kirchhoff, 22, was last seen on January 24, 1978, in Waterloo, Iowa. His disappearance occurred under suspicious circumstances. He had spent the previous night with his girlfriend and disappeared between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. the following day, possibly from an apartment on Maxwell Street, near his parents' home. Shortly after, his car was found abandoned near a factory in Waterloo. Witnesses reported hearing a commotion at the apartment, including someone saying, “Oh God, don’t do this to me!” before Kirchhoff vanished.
Authorities suspect Kirchhoff’s disappearance was related to his involvement in drug activity. It is believed he may have been carrying a significant amount of cash when he disappeared, possibly resulting in a robbery and murder. One individual, Richard Forsyth, was suspected of involvement. Forsyth was reportedly seen with bruises and carrying a rug out of his apartment the day after Kirchhoff vanished. He later fled town and disappeared in 1979, leaving further questions about his connection to the case.
Despite searches and investigations, no remains or solid evidence of Kirchhoff’s fate have been found. In 2003, authorities searched a farm near Denver, Iowa, for clues, but the search yielded no new information. The case remains unsolved, and both Kirchhoff and Forsyth are still listed as missing persons.
