Mitchell Deon Owens, a 4-year-old boy from Menlo Park, California, was last seen on February 3, 1983. In the middle of the night, an unidentified intruder broke into the Owens family's apartment. The man attacked Mitchell's mother, Ora Owens, severely beating her and attempting to strangle her with a telephone cord. Mitchell awoke during the attack, entered the room, and his mother yelled at him to run. She then lost consciousness and when she regained it the next day in the hospital, Mitchell was missing. Despite intensive searches, he has never been found.
Ora Owens believed the attacker could have been a man she encountered the night before at a local club, or another man who had posed as a police officer earlier that evening. Authorities initially mishandled the case by listing Mitchell as a runaway, delaying the investigation. Over the years, Ora received threatening phone calls from an unidentified male, but it remains unclear if these calls were connected to her son's disappearance. Despite multiple suspects and leads, the case remains unsolved, and Mitchell’s whereabouts remain unknown. His case is classified as a non-family abduction.
