Tammie Anne McCormick, a 13-year-old girl from Saratoga Springs, New York, went missing on April 29, 1986. That morning, she missed her bus to Saratoga Springs Junior High School and told her sister she would hitchhike to get there. Tammie never arrived at school and was not seen again. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a yellow-striped shirt, black corduroy pants, beige boots, and was carrying a shoulder bag.
In the days leading up to her disappearance, Tammie had mentioned to friends that she was considering running away to Florida, although her mother did not believe this would happen, particularly because Tammie left behind all her belongings and was wearing uncomfortable, worn-out clothing the day she disappeared. Her mother reported her missing two days later, thinking at first that Tammie might have stayed overnight at a friend's house, something she had done before.
Years later, in 2011, authorities identified a likely suspect in Tammie's case: Arthur Slaybaugh, a former corrections officer who died in 2001. Slaybaugh had been a person of interest for some time, as Tammie had admired him and considered him a mentor. Witnesses came forward with new information after his death, but despite suspicions of foul play, Tammie's body has never been found.
