In the late spring of 1986, 17-year-old Virgil 'Wade' Tackett traveled from his home in Ohio to the rugged landscapes of Southeast Alaska for a summer job. An adventurous and capable outdoorsman, he was looking forward to working on a commercial fishing boat, but a mix-up led him to a position at a local cannery instead.
