On a cold January night in 1987, 17-year-old Joseph Helt vanished into the snowy landscape of the Shawangunk Mountains in New York. He was a junior at Ellenville High School and, like many teenagers in the area, spent that Friday evening, January 16th, at a party with friends at the abandoned Mount Cathalia Ski Lodge. Later in the evening, Joseph left the party with three acquaintances: John LaForge, Wade Marks, and Kelly Diaz. They were reportedly heading towards Sam's Point in LaForge's Subaru when the vehicle got stuck in the snow around 3:30 a.m. According to the accounts of his companions, an argument occurred, and Joseph, frustrated, decided to walk the five miles downhill to Ellenville for help. He was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket, a t-shirt, a long-sleeved thermal shirt, a grey hooded sweatshirt, and white high-top sneakers. His three companions eventually made their way to safety separately and assumed he had gone home. It wasn't until the next day when LaForge went to get his car that they realized Joseph was missing. The initial search for Joseph was immediately hampered by a severe winter storm that blanketed the area with over two feet of snow, making roads impassable and survival in the freezing temperatures nearly impossible. Despite the treacherous conditions, a massive search effort was launched, utilizing helicopters and tracking dogs to scour the vast and rugged terrain, which is known for its caves and deep crevices. The search continued for six days before being called off due to the relentless storm. When the snow finally melted, search teams returned to the area, but no trace of Joseph was ever found. In the years that followed, both of his parents passed away without ever knowing what happened to their son. The case remained cold for many years, a lingering mystery in the small community of Ellenville. Over the decades, Joseph's disappearance has been the subject of renewed interest and investigation. His former classmates organized a candlelight vigil on the 24th anniversary of his disappearance to raise awareness for his case, which led to a new detective reviewing the files. The New York State Police have periodically re-appealed to the public for information, stating that they continue to actively investigate new leads. Rumors and theories have circulated within the community for years, with some speculating that he may have succumbed to the elements, while others fear foul play was involved. One former classmate came forward years later, claiming she had information suggesting he was killed in a fight. Despite these efforts and the passage of time, no conclusive evidence has ever surfaced to explain what happened to Joseph Helt after he walked away from the stranded car on that winter night. The case remains an active investigation, a painful and unanswered question for his remaining family and friends.
