On a cool evening in late November of 1994, Richard Gary Jr. left his home in the 4300 block of Rosewood Drive in Sumter County, South Carolina. It was around 7:30 p.m. on November 27th when the 58-year-old set out on a simple errand to a local convenience store on Cherryvale Drive, just a few miles from his house, to purchase kerosene.
