Sallee was known to live a transient lifestyle, often moving between towns and taking on manual labor jobs to support himself. At the time of his disappearance, it was understood that he was working on a ranch in the Bend, Oregon area. His family last had communication with him in 1993, when he told them he had found work on a ranch in eastern Oregon. After that conversation, his family never heard from him again.
