Her medical conditions required regular attention and made her particularly vulnerable. On the evening of September 4, 1998, Shy'Kemmia was playing outside her home on Crumpler Avenue. Her family was getting ready to attend a local high school football game. Her older sister left for a short time to get gasoline for her car, intending to pick up Shy'Kemmia when she returned. When the sister got back, Shy'Kemmia was gone.
Initially, her family wasn't consumed by panic, thinking she might have caught a ride to the game with someone else or had gone to a friend's house. However, as the evening wore on and she didn't appear, concern turned to fear. When her family tried to report her missing to the police, they were incorrectly told they needed to wait 24 hours before an investigation could begin. This delay meant that the most critical hours in the search for the missing child were lost. Once the official search did commence, it was extensive, involving local and state investigators who canvassed the area. Neighbors consented to searches of their homes, and authorities meticulously went through every residence in a five- to six-block radius of the Pate home, but found no trace of Shy'Kemmia.
Over the years, the investigation into Shy'Kemmia's disappearance has continued, but has been marked by a frustrating lack of solid evidence or leads. Investigators have long believed that she was likely taken by someone she was familiar with, as Unadilla was a small community where most people knew each other.
