In the early hours of the morning, around 4 a.m., Michael and his friends left the party on their bicycles to head home. His friends reported that Michael, who was riding behind them, fell behind at some point. They waited for him at a local 7-Eleven, but he never arrived. Assuming he had taken a different route home, they continued on their way. Michael was never seen again. He was last seen wearing a black 'Marlboro' jacket with red stripes, a t-shirt, and blue jeans. The search for Michael began later that day when his mother, concerned that he had not returned home, reported him missing. The investigation soon uncovered puzzling clues. Michael's bicycle was found in the Little Susitna River, but an extensive search of the river and its banks yielded no sign of the teenager. Adding to the bewilderment, his shoes were discovered placed neatly together on a private airstrip about 200 yards from the river. Tracker dogs were brought in, but they did not pick up his scent leading to the river, casting doubt on the theory that he may have accidentally fallen in. The clear, shallow water of the river was searched, but Michael's body was not found. Rumors circulated about a fight at the party, but nothing could be substantiated by investigators who conducted dozens of interviews and several polygraph tests. The Palmer family endured further tragedy when, nearly eleven years after Michael's disappearance, his older brother, Charles "Chucky" Palmer, also went missing under mysterious circumstances while snowmobiling.
