In the quiet community of Old Fort, Tennessee, the lives of two men were brought to a violent end in February 2017. Larry Wayne Jeffries Jr., a 52-year-old male, and his friend, 27-year-old Jeremy Michael Walker, were found deceased in Jeffries' home on March 3, 2017. Both men had been shot, their deaths later described by a judge as 'execution-style killings.' The discovery was made after Jeffries failed to show up for work, prompting his concerned family to check on him.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a mother and son duo, Valerie Hart and Ahren Presley. Investigators uncovered that the murders were rooted in a dispute over a drug debt. Evidence presented during legal proceedings showed that following the murders, Presley used Jeremy Walker's bank card at a hotel. Stolen items belonging to the victims, including a television and Jeffries' work identification, were later found at a residence where Presley had brought them.
The case against Hart and Presley culminated in January 2020. Valerie Hart chose to avoid a trial, pleading guilty to a slate of charges that included four counts of first-degree murder. In a startling confession, she admitted to being the one who pulled the trigger. A key witness, a former friend of her son, testified that Presley had confessed that he and his mother killed two people because they owed money for drugs. According to this testimony, Presley recounted that his mother was the shooter and that he was covered in blood, an experience he reportedly 'enjoyed.'
Following his mother's plea, Ahren Presley's case went before a jury. After two hours of deliberation, the jury found him guilty on all nine counts, which included felony murder, especially aggravated robbery, and theft. For their roles in the murders of Larry Jeffries Jr. and Jeremy Michael Walker, both mother and son received substantial prison sentences. Valerie Hart was handed an effective sentence of two consecutive life sentences plus twenty-five years. Ahren Presley received a total effective sentence of two life sentences plus twenty years.
