In the winter of 2023, 65-year-old Joel Stanley Rosenbaum went missing from Clarkesville, Georgia, leaving his family searching for answers. His last confirmed location was near a Chevron gas station on the evening of January 26, 2023. This sighting occurred shortly after his release from the Habersham County Detention Center, where he had been held for two days on traffic-related charges. Upon his release, Rosenbaum had only his driver's license with him, as his other belongings, including his phone and wallet, were left in his impounded car. Concerned for his well-being, jail staff had offered him a phone call and a ride, both of which he declined before leaving the facility on foot. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved gray and red Atlanta Falcons shirt, black pants, a black belt, and black and white sneakers.

Joel Rosenbaum's disappearance is particularly troubling to his family due to their belief that he was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. His brother stated that Rosenbaum did not consume alcohol or use drugs, suggesting his arrest for driving under the influence may have been the result of his declining mental state. Family members also reported that he had been showing signs of dementia. Prior to his disappearance, his brother had unsuccessfully attempted to have him committed for psychiatric care. The family had no knowledge of any connections Rosenbaum had to Habersham County and speculated he may have been traveling to North Carolina. This lack of a clear destination has complicated search efforts from the beginning.

In the years following his disappearance, extensive efforts have been made to locate Joel Rosenbaum. His family, along with law enforcement and volunteers, have conducted numerous searches in the areas surrounding Clarkesville and other locations where possible sightings were reported, including Clayton, Georgia. Despite these efforts, which included the use of specialty tracking dogs, no significant leads have been discovered. A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to his whereabouts, and his family even hired a private investigator to assist in the case. His information was also entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and DNA samples from his siblings were provided for comparison. In late 2024, after two years with no contact or activity on his social security number or driver's license, his family made the difficult decision to have him legally declared deceased, though they continue to seek closure.
