In the early morning hours of May 11, 1991, 24-year-old Terry Eugene Rouse vanished after attending a party at a residence on Swamp Road, a remote road leading from Waycross, Georgia, to the Okefenokee Swamp. He was reportedly last seen by a witness around 3 a.m., sleeping inside his light blue Ford Thunderbird. The witness stated he woke Rouse up before he and his friends departed the party.
As they drove away, they noticed a set of headlights following them along Swamp Road and into Waycross before the vehicle turned off. Rouse was never heard from again. This marked the beginning of a long and painful mystery for his family and the community, a story that would eventually uncover betrayal and long-held secrets.
Later that same day, a Georgia state trooper discovered Rouse's Thunderbird abandoned near the entrance to the Okefenokee Swamp Park. The car was found in a conspicuous spot, with the engine still idling, the radio playing, and a window rolled down. The vehicle had run out of gasoline, and its battery was low. Inside, investigators found Rouse's clothes, snakeskin boots, a carton of cigarettes, a lighter, and a single, full bottle of beer from a six-pack he had purchased the previous night. In the initial stages of the investigation, the local sheriff's deputy reportedly saw no reason to suspect foul play, and the car was returned to the family without forensic evidence being collected. This decision would later be a point of contention as the case grew cold, leaving Rouse's loved ones with more questions than answers.
For years, the investigation into Terry Rouse's disappearance yielded few results. Suspicion, however, eventually centered on his cousin and close friend, Craig Lester Thrift. The two worked together at the Thrift family's concrete business, and Rouse often provided transportation for his cousin. More than two decades after Rouse vanished, the case was reopened, and new witness testimony emerged. Several acquaintances of Thrift came forward, stating that he had confessed to them that he had killed Rouse. The motive was reportedly an affair Rouse had been having with Thrift's wife. According to these witnesses, Thrift admitted to assaulting and shooting his cousin before hiding his body. In March 2012, Craig Thrift was arrested and charged with murder. Although Terry Rouse's body has never been found, Thrift was convicted of felony murder in 2014 and sentenced to life in prison.
