Robert Matthew Bockmann, known to his loved ones as Robbie, was a 26-year-old man who disappeared from Boulder, Colorado, on April 18, 2003. Just three weeks prior to his disappearance, he had moved to Colorado to be with his mother and brother, having previously lived in Texas. Musically gifted, Robbie was a self-taught guitarist and songwriter. He was also a father, deeply distressed by a recent divorce and the resulting separation from his young daughter. Those close to him noted that he had been struggling with his mental health, including severe depression, and had made previous suicide attempts. A few days before he went missing, his brother observed that Robbie seemed 'incoherent' during a dinner they shared. On the day he was last seen, Bockmann mentioned plans to go for a bicycle ride up Flagstaff Mountain and had also purchased flowers for a friend.
The day after Robert Bockmann was last seen, his silver Dodge Neon, which had Texas license plates, was discovered abandoned at the South Boulder Creek Trailhead at Walker Ranch. Inside the vehicle, authorities found his personal belongings, including his wallet which contained his identification and $50. There were no immediate signs of foul play in or around the car. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a white male with blond hair and blue eyes, standing at 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds with a muscular build. He had a noticeable long scar on his inner left forearm, running from his wrist to his elbow. He was believed to be wearing a white t-shirt with an oval logo, blue shorts, and either blue running shoes or new Vasque brand hiking or trail running shoes.
Despite extensive searches of the rugged and steep terrain around Walker Ranch, no trace of Robert Bockmann was ever found. The area is known for its challenging landscape and is inhabited by wildlife such as bears and mountain lions, which has led to speculation that his remains could have been disturbed by predators. His family, including his father and brother, have expressed their belief that he may have taken his own life, possibly in a way that his body would not be easily discovered. The case has left his family without closure for many years.
