Greg Mickey, a 58-year-old experienced diver, went missing on June 18, 2005, while diving near Frying Pan Shoals, North Carolina, approximately 30 miles southeast of Bald Head Island. He was accompanied by two friends during a dive in challenging conditions, with ocean swells reaching five to six feet. After finishing a 110-foot dive, Mickey and his partner were swept away by a strong current. Although his partner was rescued by the Coast Guard nine hours later, Mickey was never seen again.
