In early 2008, a 22-year-old from Orem, Utah named Jesse Glen Pinegar, embarked on a solo vacation to the island of Kauai, Hawaii. He rented an apartment and, captivated by the island's natural beauty, became a frequent hiker of the Kalalau Trail, a path known for its breathtaking views and treacherous conditions.
