Bernard Rusness, aged 48, and his common-law wife, Peggy Parmenter, disappeared under mysterious circumstances on April 3, 1976, from their farm in Wolf Lake, Minnesota. That evening, a devastating fire consumed their home, which was discovered by neighbors between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. Tragically, the remains of their eight-year-old son, Brian, were found in the rubble, along with the bodies of the family dogs. However, both Bernard and Peggy were missing, and investigators concluded that they had likely survived the blaze.

The couple was last seen earlier that day; Bernard had been leveling the driveway around 4:00 p.m., and they were spotted at a grocery store together. Strangely, all their vehicles were found at the scene with keys in the ignition, and Bernard had been working on his Ford pickup truck when the fire started. Additionally, no signs of them leaving intentionally were found, as they had left behind approximately $1,000 in their bank accounts and their uncollected paychecks. The case has baffled authorities ever since, and foul play is suspected.
