James Ronald Peters, a 19-year-old from El Cajon, California, was last seen on September 3, 1988. Shortly before his disappearance, he had moved out of his family's home in La Mesa and into an apartment on Peach Avenue with a roommate. On the night of his last known sighting, Peters briefly visited his mother, dropping off his house keys and acting unusually somber. He left after telling her that she would "be safer" with the keys. This was the last time his family saw him.

Following his disappearance, Peters' green 1970 Volkswagen Beetle was discovered abandoned and stripped in December 1988 on Mussey Grade Road in Ramona. A disturbing detail was a swastika etched into the car's roof, though its significance remains unclear. Speculation arose about Peters' possible involvement in an occult group, rumored to be called "Children of the Rainbow," but no concrete evidence has linked his disappearance to such activities.

Peters was known to struggle with drug use and low self-esteem during this period, and he was described as trying to get his life back on track. He enjoyed activities like skateboarding, body surfing, and BB gun shooting. Foul play is suspected in his case, though no suspects have been officially identified. His disappearance remains unsolved.
