He claimed she left their home in a white pickup truck with an unidentified woman and never returned.
However, her family and friends doubted this narrative, as Ana was described as a loving mother who maintained regular contact with her family, especially her sister and mother.
Ana’s family, who did not believe she would have left her children voluntarily, expressed concerns about her relationship with her husband. They reported that she had been unhappy in her marriage, and her sister had even offered to help her leave. Ana's mother and sister tried multiple times to report her missing, but she wasn’t officially reported until nearly three months later, in April 1997.
