He also wore a gold rosary around his neck and a wedding band with hearts and an "X" on his right index finger. His car was later found parked near a business on Stillwell Avenue and Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, but the vehicle yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. Coppola's disappearance occurred just a week before he was scheduled to be sentenced for his role in a fraud case. He had pleaded guilty to fraud charges and was expected to receive a sentence that would have had him out of prison by the age of 40, allowing him to be present for the birth of his third child. Despite the impending prison sentence, those close to him found it unlikely that he would have voluntarily fled, especially considering he and his wife had recently purchased a new home and had posted a significant bond. A government witness claimed to have relayed a message from Bellomo, who was incarcerated at the time, ordering the killing of Coppola.
