On March 3, 2011, 42-year-old Jennifer Mattes was last seen in Brooklyn, New York. At the time of her disappearance, she was a resident of a group home for the recovering mentally ill, which was operated by the organization Services for the Underserved. Jennifer, who is described as a dependent adult with a history of mental illness, had left the facility before. However, on previous occasions, she had always made contact with her family within a week and would return with their help. This time was different. When she left, it is believed she had about $75 in cash with her. Jennifer is a white female with blue eyes and neck-length, naturally curly, prematurely gray hair. She is between 5'5" and 5'7" tall and weighed between 125 and 135 pounds at the time she went missing. She is near-sighted and has difficulty seeing without her silver-rimmed glasses. It was noted that her eyelids could appear slightly puffy due to allergies. When she was last seen, she was likely wearing a black down coat with white trimming and jeans. Her footwear might have been black Nike walking shoes, Timberland ankle-length hiking boots, or green Puma tennis shoes. She may have also been carrying a brown rough leather backpack and wearing a Timex digital watch. In the past, Jennifer had a pattern of taking a bus out of New York City, often traveling west to destinations such as St. Louis, Chicago, or Omaha, but she had never been gone for this long without making contact. The investigation into her disappearance was initially handled by the 90th Precinct in Brooklyn before being transferred to the New York City Missing Persons Detective. Despite the passage of time, her case remains unsolved, and there has been no sign of her since the day she walked away from the group home. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are a cause for great concern for those who know her, as this prolonged absence is uncharacteristic, even with her history of leaving.
