In the spring of 1999, a 54-year-old Serbian immigrant named Stanina Ignjatovic was living a life fraught with conflict in Brooklyn, New York. On the morning of April 15th, she made a phone call to a relative from her apartment on Conselyea Street, stating her intention to travel to Manhattan to visit her sister. This was the last time anyone is known to have heard from her. Stanina, who was hard of hearing and spoke limited English, never arrived at her sister's home, and a subsequent check of her own apartment revealed no signs of a struggle or forced entry. She had vanished, leaving behind a community of friends and family to wonder what had become of her. The circumstances leading up to Stanina's disappearance were anything but ordinary. For two years, she had been embroiled in a contentious legal battle with her landlord, Marion Okuniewski. In 1997, an electrical fire had rendered her rent-controlled apartment uninhabitable, forcing her to relocate temporarily. When the repairs on her original apartment languished, Stanina, with the assistance of a tenant advocacy group, took her landlord to Housing Court to compel him to complete the work so she could move back in. This legal action seemed to escalate the tensions, with both Stanina and her tenant advocate reporting that they had been threatened by the landlord. The situation took a more sinister turn when an unsolved arson occurred at the home of the tenant advocate. Further complicating Stanina's life, the temporary apartment provided by her landlord was burglarized on three separate occasions. During these break-ins, her clothing and furniture were slashed, and, significantly, court documents related to her housing dispute were stolen. A critical hearing in this ongoing legal battle was scheduled for just five days after she was last seen. Her landlord, however, denied any wrongdoing or having any personal issues with her. The timing of her disappearance, so close to the court date and amid such a turbulent period, has left many to speculate about the nature of her case. To this day, Stanina Ignjatovic remains a missing person, and the exact circumstances of what happened to her on that April day are unknown, leaving her case unsolved.
