Aliayah Lunsford, a 3-year-old girl from Weston, West Virginia, was last seen on the morning of September 24, 2011, in her family’s home. She had been unwell with flu-like symptoms the previous evening. Her mother, Lena Lunsford, claimed she checked on Aliayah early that morning, but when she went to check again around 9:00 a.m., the child was missing. Lena did not report her missing until 11:30 a.m., stating she had spent the intervening time searching for her daughter herself.
Despite extensive searches of the area, including nearby rivers, no trace of Aliayah was found.
Investigations into the case quickly raised suspicions around Lena Lunsford's involvement. Nine days after Aliayah's disappearance, her siblings were removed from the home and placed in foster care. In 2016, Lena was arrested in Florida and charged with the murder of her daughter. During her trial in 2018, two of Aliayah’s older sisters testified that Lena had struck Aliayah in the head with a wooden bed slat the night before she disappeared. They recounted that Aliayah became unresponsive, and Lena hid her body, later disposing of it in a rural area. Lena was convicted of child abuse resulting in death, concealment of a body, and other charges, and she is currently serving a life sentence without parole. Despite the conviction, Aliayah's remains have never been found.
