Paul Robert Hibbard, a 25-year-old geologist from Mead, Colorado, disappeared on May 28, 1976, while on a routine geological exploration in Gillette, Wyoming. Hibbard worked for Berge Exploration, specializing in identifying mineral deposits such as uranium, coal, and oil shale. Shortly before his disappearance, he received a suspicious phone call requesting him to bring his specialized van to Gillette.
After confirming with his boss that the call was a hoax, Hibbard continued with his regular work duties.
On the day he vanished, Hibbard was driving a truck containing $30,000 worth of radioactive materials used for geological purposes. His vehicle disappeared with him, raising concerns that he may have been kidnapped for his expertise and equipment. In July 1976, Joseph O. Dowdy, a local resident, was arrested after being caught with nearly $10,000 worth of Hibbard's geological equipment. However, Dowdy did not provide any information regarding Hibbard’s whereabouts.
Hibbard’s truck was found abandoned in August, northwest of Upton, Wyoming, after an anonymous tip. Blood was found inside the vehicle, leading authorities to suspect foul play, though DNA testing was not available at the time. Despite extensive investigations, including questioning Dowdy, who was later convicted of grand larceny, Hibbard's fate remains unknown.
