In the summer of 1989, a long-time resident of San Diego, California, 75-year-old John Scott Hahn, embarked on a trip to Laughlin, Nevada. Prior to his departure on June 10, 1989, he drove his wife to the airport. He was reportedly carrying a significant amount of cash. John, who sometimes went by the alias Stanley Williamson, was described as a white male with graying brown hair, brown eyes, and a high forehead.
He wore dentures and bifocal glasses with 'Photo-Gray' variable tint lenses and gold-colored metal frames. Distinctive marks included a twelve-inch surgical scar on his chest from an aortic aneurysm repair and a two-inch scar on the left side of his cheek. He was left-handed and typically wore his watch on his right wrist. At the time of his disappearance, he was experiencing some health issues, including symptoms of dementia, occasional memory problems, and difficulty walking more than short distances.
The last confirmed sighting of John Hahn was on June 12, 1989, in Laughlin, Nevada. There were unconfirmed reports of witnesses seeing him at a Laughlin convenience store making a phone call around the Fourth of July weekend in 1989, but he was not heard from again after that time. On July 21, 1989, his wife received a call from the Las Vegas Metro Police substation in Laughlin, informing her that their white 1979 Mercury Marquis had been discovered abandoned in the desert south of the city. The vehicle was found stuck in deep sand in a remote area off the Needles Highway, a place not typically accessible by a passenger car, roughly 100 yards from the Colorado River.
The condition of the abandoned car added to the mystery of John's whereabouts. The windows were rolled down, and the gas tank was full. Inside, his packed suitcase was found on the back seat. An inspection of the vehicle revealed that the radiator had recently been filled and treated with a stop-leak compound, though the air conditioning was not working. Despite the discovery of his car, no trace of John Hahn was ever found. The San Diego Police Department is the investigating agency for his case. Although he has been declared legally deceased, his case remains classified as an endangered missing person, leaving his loved ones without answers.
