Steven Thell Koecher, age 30, was last seen on December 13, 2009, in Henderson, Nevada. At the time of his disappearance, he was living in St. George, Utah, and was facing financial difficulties. In the days leading up to his disappearance, Koecher engaged in extensive and unexplained travel, driving hundreds of miles throughout Utah and Nevada. On one of these trips, he visited the family of a former girlfriend in Ruby Valley, Nevada.
The purpose of much of this travel remains unknown to his family.
On the morning of December 13, 2009, Koecher drove from St. George to the Las Vegas area. A friend from his church called him to ask if he could cover a church meeting, to which Koecher responded that he was in Las Vegas and unable to. Around midday, residential security cameras in the Anthem neighborhood of Henderson, Nevada, recorded Koecher parking his white 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier at the end of a cul-de-sac. A few minutes later, a figure believed to be Koecher was seen walking away from the vehicle, carrying what appeared to be a folder or portfolio. He walked down the sidewalk, crossed the street, and went out of the camera's view. He has not been seen since.
Koecher's car was found abandoned on December 14th in the upscale residential neighborhood where he was last seen. Inside the vehicle were personal belongings such as his shaving kit, coats, pillows, and Christmas gifts he had recently purchased. However, his wallet, driver's license, and cell phone were missing. His laptop and phone charger were later found at his home. For two days following his last sighting, his cell phone signal was picked up by various towers in the Henderson area, with the last known activity being a check of his voicemail on the morning of December 14th. The phone signal was eventually lost.
Investigations by both Utah and Nevada police have not yielded any definitive answers regarding Koecher's disappearance. His family does not believe he would have voluntarily disappeared or committed suicide, and there is no evidence of foul play. Theories surrounding his disappearance range from a job search gone wrong to his potential involvement in illicit activities, though no evidence has surfaced to support the latter. A connection to the disappearance of Susan Powell, who went missing from Utah around the same time, was explored but ultimately dismissed by investigators.
