Matthew Ferris Missing Person Case

Matthew John Ferris, a 20-year-old from Des Moines, Iowa, was reported missing by his family on March 7, 1991. He was last seen by his family in February 1991. At the time of his disappearance, Matthew had brown hair and blue eyes, stood 5'10" tall, and weighed 140 pounds. Authorities have indicated he might have been headed to the West Coast. He was driving a silver 1982 Pontiac.

This was not the first time Matthew had disappeared. On July 25, 1990, he had told his family he was taking the day off from work to help a friend move. His father later found a note in which Matthew apologized for any pain his disappearance would cause. He returned home a week later, seemingly frightened. Following this incident, Matthew sought psychiatric treatment for depression for six months and enrolled at Iowa State University.

In the days leading up to his disappearance in early 1991, his family described his behavior as abnormal. His father noted that he seemed to be exhibiting manic behavior and was uncharacteristically happy. He told his family he was going to the movies and never came back. It is believed he may have traveled to Custer State Park in South Dakota, a place of interest to him due to his fascination with Native American folklore. His case is considered an "Endangered/Physical" missing person case, suggesting his physical safety may be in danger. The Des Moines Police Department is the investigating agency for his case.
