Harold Orville Doerring, 66, was last seen on February 16, 1997, in Decorah, Iowa. He had visited his daughter in Cedar Falls the day before, and they discussed plans for him to move in with her later that week. When his daughters went to help him with the move on February 22, they discovered he was missing. His landlord informed them that the Iowa State Patrol had found Harold’s pickup truck abandoned on February 19, near Highway 218 south of Mount Pleasant—more than 100 miles away from
his home.
Despite the discovery of his vehicle, there was no sign of Harold. He had been battling depression following the death of his wife and the loss of one of his children years earlier. Family members suspect that his mental health may have played a role in his disappearance, but there is no evidence of foul play. Authorities continue to classify the case as an endangered missing person, and his body has never been recovered.
