In the winter of 2006, a 54-year-old man named William Hobert Crandell Sr. vanished from his home on the south side of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. On February 20th, he was seen leaving his residence, and then was never heard from again. The days that followed his disappearance were filled with a deafening silence for those who knew him, as a man who was a father and had attended high school in Mississippi was suddenly gone without a trace. His personal details, a white male, standing 6'2" and weighing around 200 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, were circulated in the hopes that someone might have seen something that could lead to answers. The initial investigation into William's disappearance uncovered a troubling lead. His vehicle, a dark silver 2000 Lexus sedan, was discovered abandoned in Newcastle, Oklahoma, a town just a short drive from where he was last seen. This discovery shifted the focus of the case, suggesting that William had not left on his own accord and that foul play was likely involved. The Oklahoma City Police Department took the lead in the investigation, working to piece together the events that transpired after William left his home on that February day. As they delved deeper, a prime suspect emerged, a man by the name of Ervin Lee McCoy Jr., a convicted bank robber with a violent history. The case took a significant turn when McCoy, already implicated in several other murders, entered into a plea agreement in a separate case in September 2010. As part of this agreement, he confessed to his involvement in William's disappearance and agreed to lead authorities to the location of his body. Hope for a resolution was short-lived, however, as the search for William's remains proved unsuccessful. McCoy passed away in February 2019, taking any final secrets about William's whereabouts with him. To this day, the disappearance of William Hobert Crandell Sr. remains an unsolved case, a painful and enduring mystery for his family and a somber entry in the records of Oklahoma's cold cases.
