Derek Lueking Missing Person Case

In the early morning hours of March 17, 2012, 24-year-old Derek Lueking was seen on surveillance video leaving a Microtel Inn in Cherokee, North Carolina. This would be the last confirmed sighting of the young man. Concern for Derek's welfare had begun a couple of days earlier when he failed to show up for his job as an aide at Peninsula Behavioral Health Center in Tennessee and was not answering his phone. His family, after being alerted by his roommate, drove from Virginia to his home in Louisville, Tennessee. An examination of his computer revealed searches for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a hotel reservation near the park.

The family's investigation led them to the Microtel, but they had missed him by hours. As they drove back towards Tennessee, they made a pivotal discovery in the Newfound Gap parking lot, an area where the Appalachian Trail intersects with the road: Derek's white Ford Escape. Inside the vehicle, they found his wallet, car key, and a perplexing note that simply read, 'Don't Look For Me'. Adding to the mystery, Derek had recently purchased over a thousand dollars' worth of camping and survival gear, including a tent and a sleeping bag, yet many of these items were left behind in the car. He appeared to have entered the vast wilderness of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with only a small daypack.

An extensive search was launched by the National Park Service, involving numerous searchers, dog teams, and helicopters that scoured miles of trails. Despite these exhaustive efforts, no trace of Derek Lueking has ever been found. His family and friends indicated that he was an avid camper and a fan of a survival television show, leading some to speculate he may have intentionally gone into the park to be alone. However, they have also stated that he did not have severe depression or suicidal tendencies. The circumstances surrounding Derek's disappearance remain unclear. The discovery of his car at a popular trailhead, a cryptic note, and the abandonment of newly purchased survival gear have left investigators and his loved ones with more questions than answers in a case that has grown cold with the passage of time.
