Steven Michael Babka was a 58-year-old man who was experiencing homelessness at the time of his disappearance from Marengo, Iowa. His last confirmed sighting was on May 25, 2012. Mr. Babka was living a quiet life in a tent he had set up on the outskirts of town, near the Iowa River. He was known to travel around the area on a bicycle, as he did not own an automobile. He commonly wore tie-dyed t-shirts and short pants.
In the middle of June 2012, it was discovered that Mr.
Babka was no longer at his campsite. Concern grew when it became clear that all of his personal belongings had been left behind in his tent. Among the items abandoned were his essential prescription medications and his eyeglasses, things he needed for his health and well-being. Despite leaving behind all his worldly possessions, there was no sign of Mr. Babka.
Mr. Babka is described as a white male with brown hair that was turning gray and blue eyes. He stood at approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed around 230 to 240 pounds. He had several distinguishing physical features, including a crippled right hand, significant hearing impairment, and a tendency to speak in a very low, hoarse voice. He also had a number of scars on his face and right arm, as well as tattoos on his head and right arm.
