On the morning he went missing, Dougherty was at the Metropolitan Cafe on Lower Fourth Street in Sioux City. He reportedly had breakfast and chatted with some regular patrons before leaving. He was last seen wearing gray pants, a gray zippered jacket over his shirt, black shoes, and a gray hat, possibly his AMVETS hat. After he walked out of the cafe, neither Dougherty nor his vehicle were ever seen again.
