Ronald LeRoy Zellmer, 31, was last seen on April 6, 1985, in Sioux City, Iowa. At around 5:50 a.m., South Sioux City, Nebraska, police discovered his 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier abandoned on the south end of the Veterans Memorial Bridge, with its engine still running. When Sioux City police checked his apartment at 1003 Pierce Street, they found it empty and showed no signs of disturbance.
Zellmer had been struggling with long-term depression, and investigators considered the possibility of suicide, but his body was never recovered despite searches of the Missouri River.
Although his case has been treated as an endangered missing person situation, it remains unsolved after decades. His family reported that Zellmer had been dealing with significant emotional distress prior to his disappearance. However, the circumstances surrounding his abandoned vehicle have left room for speculation about whether foul play might have been involved. Despite extensive efforts, no conclusive evidence has surfaced regarding his fate.
