Robert Ronald Tippit, 36, was last seen on January 1, 1980, in Kansas City, Missouri, although some reports suggest he might have disappeared earlier in the late 1970s. He had a complex past, including using several aliases, such as Richard Allen Lais and Ron Roberts. In 1979, Tippit testified in a California court against a suspect involved in a prostitution case.
