In the late summer of 1998, a young man named Russell "Russ" John Olmstead vanished from the rural landscape of Ellisforde, Washington. On August 15th, the 24-year-old was given a ride by his mother to the Don Bensing Farm, where he planned to stay in a picker's cabin. This was the last time she, or anyone else, would report seeing him. At the time of his disappearance, Russell was described as a white male, standing between 5'10" and 6'0" tall and weighing approximately 140 to 150 pounds. He had long brown hair, often worn in a ponytail, and brown eyes. His appearance was marked by a few distinct scars on his left arm and left knee, as well as a birthmark on his left arm. The circumstances surrounding Russell's disappearance remain shrouded in mystery, with very few details available to the public. After his mother dropped him off at the farm, he seemingly vanished without a trace. There has been no contact with family or friends since that day. The Okanogan County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into his disappearance, but the case has yielded few leads over the decades. An anonymous tip was reportedly received in 1998, but it did not lead to a breakthrough in the case. The investigation into what happened to Russell Olmstead is ongoing, handled by the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office. His case is a painful example of the many long-unsolved missing person cases in Washington. With the passage of time, the chances of finding answers diminish, yet for the families of the missing, hope often endures. The lack of information and closure in Russell's case leaves a void for those who knew and loved him, a story without an ending that began on a summer day with a ride to a farm.
