In May of 1999, a 28-year-old woman named Wendy Kimura, a resident of Chicago, Illinois, made plans to visit a friend. She boarded a train and traveled to the suburban village of Cary to spend the night at her friend's home, located in the 200 block of Northwest Highway. The following day, she was reportedly seen walking along Route 14 in Cary.
