On a distressing evening in Kelso, Washington, 16-year-old Alex Daniel Viorato-Rodriguez was last seen on May 10, 2013. At approximately 8:45 p.m., the community was faced with a heart-wrenching situation as the troubled young man, reportedly grappling with personal issues, made statements suggesting he intended to harm himself. These were not idle threats, as he was then witnessed jumping from the Lexington Bridge, plunging 40 to 50 feet into the cold waters of the Cowlitz River. At the time of this tragic event, Alex, a Hispanic male with brown hair and brown eyes, was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans. The immediate aftermath of Alex's leap into the river was a frantic scene of observation and attempted rescue. The river's current quickly took hold of him, carrying him approximately a third of a mile downstream toward the Rocky Point area. Deputies from the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office, who were on the scene, observed Alex struggling in the water, fighting to stay afloat and seemingly trying to make his way to the shore. Despite their presence and the unfolding efforts to reach him, the river's power was too great, and Alex tragically disappeared beneath the surface before any aid could be rendered. In the days, weeks, and years that have followed that tragic evening, search and recovery efforts have been undertaken to locate Alex, but his body has never been found. The official circumstances surrounding his disappearance indicate that he is presumed to have drowned in the Cowlitz River. The case of Alex Viorato-Rodriguez remains a sorrowful chapter for his family and the Kelso community. It serves as a painful reminder of a young life lost under deeply troubling circumstances, a life that ended abruptly in the turbulent waters of the river, leaving behind unanswered questions and a lingering sense of loss for those who knew and cared for him.
