On November 10, 2013, 47-year-old Mikel Scott Schepke went for a walk from a residence on Birchwood Drive, near Morrill Road, in Rogers City, Michigan. This was a daily routine for Mikel, who was living with his sister and brother-in-law at the time. Typically, he would return within a few hours from his walks near the Herman Vogler Conservation Area. On this particular day, however, he never came back. At the time of his disappearance, Mikel was wearing dark jeans, a dark blue coat, and a blue hat. He was also known to wear eyeglasses with metal frames. Mikel is described as a loving and gentle soul who saw the good in everyone he met. His life, however, was marked by a tragic event that occurred when he was just ten years old. In 1976, Mikel and his mother were brutally attacked during a robbery at their family's convenience store. The assault left him with severe intellectual disabilities due to a brain injury that required surgery and the insertion of a steel plate in his skull. In the year and a half leading up to his disappearance, Mikel's health had shown significant improvement under the care of his sister and brother-in-law. He was an insulin-dependent diabetic and required seven different medications. There is concern that he had not eaten much before his walk on the day he went missing and could have become ill. An extensive search was launched for Mikel, involving law enforcement agencies from across the region, including the Presque Isle County Sheriff's Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and numerous volunteer groups. Despite their efforts, which spanned five and a half days, no trace of him was ever found. The search was eventually suspended due to the start of firearms deer season and increasingly harsh weather conditions. Further searches, including one with K-9 units the following spring, also yielded no results. The case remains unsolved, and Mikel's disappearance continues to be a source of pain and uncertainty for his family and community. Little information is available regarding his fate, and his case is considered an endangered missing person case.
