In the winter of 1998, concern began to grow for 57-year-old James Horton, a resident of Toledo, Ohio. Friends and acquaintances had not seen or heard from him for a couple of weeks, which was apparently out of character. The silence became unsettling, prompting a friend to take action. On February 5, 1998, this friend officially reported James as a missing person to the Toledo Police Department, setting in motion an investigation into his sudden and unexplained absence.
