On April 15, 2007, 37-year-old Paul Jason Shuart was traveling with his mother, returning to their home in Portland, Oregon, from a family visit in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their journey involved a Greyhound bus trip, which included a stop in Baker City, Oregon. During the trip, Paul, who had a history of medical conditions including a brain disorder and seizures triggered by stress, had not been eating or sleeping well and had forgotten to pack his antidepressant medication. At the bus station in Baker City, his mother noted that he began to act confused and seemed to be in a catatonic state. Concerned for his well-being, she called for an ambulance, and he was taken to a local hospital. While his mother was occupied with paperwork at the hospital's emergency room, Paul, appearing paranoid and confused, walked out. His mother followed him, attempting to persuade him to return, but he refused. A police officer intervened to help, but Paul would not get into the patrol car. The two then walked from the hospital back towards the bus station area, with his mother continuing her efforts to calm him down. However, Paul proceeded to walk up an embankment towards Interstate 84 near exit 304. At approximately 4:40 p.m., his mother called the police for assistance once more. By the time officers arrived around 5:00 p.m., Paul was gone. An immediate search of the area by law enforcement yielded no trace of Paul Shuart. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a white male, 6 feet tall, and weighing around 300 pounds, with brown, partially graying hair, a mustache, and a goatee. He has green eyes, a small scar over his right eye, and a small red birthmark on the back of his neck. He was last seen wearing a blue Detroit Lions baseball cap, a gray and white sweatshirt or winter jacket, gray sweatpants that were muddy on the lower legs, and Columbia Sportswear hiking boots. One possibility that has been considered is that he may have accepted a ride from a passing motorist on I-84. Despite the passage of time, Paul Jason Shuart has not been seen or heard from since that day, and his case remains an unsolved missing persons investigation.
