In the late winter of 2019, a heart-wrenching story began to unfold in the small city of La Grande, Oregon. On March 20th, a 32-year-old man named Justin Lyden Mace was last seen. He was a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes, standing at approximately five feet, seven inches tall and weighing around 160 pounds. On the day he vanished, he was wearing a black coat and blue jeans. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are profoundly distressing; he was last observed jumping into the cold, swift waters of the Grande Ronde River. The events of that day are connected to an earlier incident. In the early hours of March 20, 2019, an Oregon State Police trooper pursued a vehicle, which was later found unattended. Shortly after, the trooper saw a man walking along Interstate 84 and attempted to make contact. It was at this point that the man tragically jumped into the river. Later that same day, after 1 p.m., a body was sighted floating facedown in the Grande Ronde River, passing under the North Spruce Street bridge before being lost in the rapids. Rescue crews, including the La Grande Rural Fire Department and Union County Search and Rescue, were staged and attempted to intercept the body with ropes but were unsuccessful due to the turbulent water. The search continued for several hours before being called off, pending any new sightings or information. Although it has not been officially confirmed that the man who jumped into the river was the same individual seen floating later that day, it is widely believed to be the case. Justin Mace is presumed to have drowned, but his body has never been recovered. This lack of resolution leaves his case classified as a lost or injured missing person. The Oregon State Police opened an investigation into his disappearance on the very day he was last seen. The case remains a painful mystery for his loved ones and the community, a story without a final chapter, centered on the powerful and unforgiving Grande Ronde River.
