In the winter of 2014, a promising young graduate student named Qi Qin, known to some as Sherry, vanished from her life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a community filled with concern and unanswered questions. The 25-year-old, a native of China, had moved to the city two years prior to pursue a master's degree in East Asian studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She was last seen on January 5, 2014, in the Swissvale area of Pittsburgh. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing between 110 and 120 pounds, with black, medium-length hair and brown eyes. She was known to wear black glasses with a thick frame and was last seen wearing a white coat. Concerns for Qi's well-being grew after a roommate reported her missing on that same day. Leading up to her disappearance, Qi had expressed some uncertainty about her academic path. She had sent an email to her adviser suggesting she might withdraw from her program because she was struggling to decide on a thesis topic. Her adviser had hoped to discuss this with her, but she went missing before they had the chance to meet. It was also noted that while she had been living in the U.S. for two years, her English language skills were somewhat limited. The day she was last seen, she reportedly told her roommate that she was packing her things and leaving. The Pittsburgh Police Department launched an investigation into Qi Qin's disappearance, reaching out to the public for any information that could help locate her. University officials also became involved, contacting her family in Shanghai to see if she had attempted to return home, but unfortunately, that was not the case. Despite efforts to trace her whereabouts through her cell phone's GPS, there were no positive results, and calls to her phone went directly to voicemail. Over the years, the case has grown cold, with no significant leads to indicate what may have happened to her. While there has been no evidence to suggest foul play, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain a mystery. The case of Qi Qin is an overview of a person who seemingly vanished, leaving her family, friends, and the academic community with a profound sense of loss and a long wait for answers.
