Kelly Marie Ford, a 23-year-old mother from South Boston, was last seen on August 15, 2001, in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was reportedly on her way to a job interview in the nearby town of Marblehead after leaving a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Lynn. According to reports, she intended to take a city bus to her interview but may have mistakenly disembarked in Swampscott, several stops too early.
Her family, concerned when she did not return, reported her missing to the Lynn Police Department on August 16, 2001. At the time of her disappearance, Kelly was the mother of a 4-year-old daughter. The initial phase of the investigation focused on her last known movements and the circumstances surrounding her intended job interview.
The search for Kelly took a tragic turn on October 22, 2001, when her dismembered remains were discovered in a shallow grave on Scusset Beach in Sandwich, on Cape Cod. The grim discovery was made by two children who were playing frisbee on the beach. The state of her remains was particularly disturbing to investigators. Though her head was not found with the rest of her body, authorities at the time believed it had been originally buried with her. Kelly's mother, Deborah Ford, was able to positively identify her daughter through jewelry found near the remains and a photograph of a distinctive tattoo on her back—a Chinese symbol for "Summer Love," which was the name of her young daughter.
The homicide investigation that followed has been described as active and ongoing, yet no charges have been filed in direct connection to Kelly Ford's death. Over the years, investigators have explored potential links to other gruesome crimes in the region. One individual who has been considered a person of interest is Eugene McCollom, a convicted murderer known for the brutal nature of his crimes, which included dismemberment. While similarities have been noted between Kelly's case and others connected to McCollom, he has not been charged in her murder.
