Robert Anderson, aged 31, was last seen on August 15, 1993, alongside his girlfriend, Kristen Diede, in Wishek, North Dakota. The couple had traveled from Minnesota to Wishek to drop off Diede's two children at their paternal grandparents' home. After this, Diede called friends, expressing concerns about difficulties related to retrieving her children, who were in a custody battle following her divorce. Anderson and Diede then visited her brother before setting out to return home. Unfortunately, they never made it back and have not been heard from since that day.
Five days later, on August 20, their van was discovered abandoned in a parking lot at a railroad station in Aberdeen, South Dakota, about 100 miles from Wishek. This discovery heightened suspicions about their disappearance, especially since all their belongings had been left behind in Minnesota. Initially, it was speculated that the couple might have disappeared voluntarily. However, those close to Diede, particularly her family, strongly refuted this theory, given that she would not have willingly abandoned her children.
The couple’s disappearance remains one of North Dakota’s most puzzling unsolved cases. Investigators now believe that Anderson and Diede were likely victims of foul play. Despite efforts to solve the case, including offering a reward for information and repeated public appeals, no substantial leads have emerged. The case remains open, and authorities continue to appeal to the public for information, especially from those in areas between Wishek and Aberdeen who might uncover any clues to their fate.
