Ismael Gonzalez, a 50-year-old man, went missing on May 17, 2015, while attempting to cross into the United States from Reynosa, Mexico. He was part of a group of individuals who were led by a guide across the border. After entering Texas, the group was driven south of the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint to avoid detection. They were dropped off and began their journey on foot, intending to bypass the checkpoint.
