Frederick Albert Iwert, age 66, was last seen on April 20, 1983, in Washington County, Kansas. A farmer with a history of health issues, including a thyroid condition and difficulty walking, Iwert was devoted to his farm, particularly the livestock inherited from his late wife. On the day of his disappearance, he was expecting his neighbor, J. Ted Garner, a chiropractor, to help with farm chores and provide a treatment.
Garner later claimed that Iwert had left with a woman named Martha Kline, who allegedly appeared through a personals ad, but investigators found no trace of this woman, and no one else had ever seen or heard of her. Suspicion grew when it was discovered that Garner had forged documents, claiming ownership of Iwert’s farm and cattle. Despite Garner's claims that Iwert sold him the property, a handwriting expert determined the signatures were forgeries.
In 1984, Garner was convicted of first-degree murder, forgery, and attempted theft, even though Iwert's body was never found. He was only the second person in Kansas history to be convicted of murder without a body being recovered.
