That evening, her mother was preparing to leave for St. Joseph, Missouri, around 7:00 p.m. and extended an invitation for Ronda to join her, which she declined.
When her mother returned home at approximately 9:30 p.m., Ronda was gone, having vanished without a trace. The last known clothing she was wearing consisted of a tan quilted waist-length jacket with a dark brown stand-up collar, a white and navy sweater vest, a long-sleeved blouse of an unstated color, blue jeans, and brown loafer-style shoes.
A few hours later, at around 10:30 p.m., a concerning discovery was made by Ronda's father as he was heading to work. He spotted his daughter's car parked just off U.S. Highway 36, near an overpass that leads to the Missouri River levee. The scene was unsettling; the keys were still in the vehicle, and her purse and other personal belongings were left behind, suggesting a hasty departure. Investigators at the time noted that the nearby Missouri River was frozen over. They observed some holes in the ice, but it could not be determined if they were connected to Ronda's disappearance.
