Originally from Oneida, Illinois, Megan had moved to Kansas and was living in Alden before her disappearance. Her last activity on Facebook occurred on November 30, 2015, and she was not reported missing until February 2016, as her spontaneous lifestyle often led to periods of no contact with friends or family.
Despite this, her loved ones became alarmed when she failed to communicate over the holidays.
Megan had been in a tumultuous and abusive relationship with David Madden, a man who had previously dated her mother. Their relationship was reportedly marked by violence, with Megan once confiding in friends that if she ever disappeared, Madden would likely be responsible. On the day of her last known activity, Megan messaged a friend that she was at Madden’s house. Madden later claimed that Megan had stolen from him, and they had an argument before she left.
Though there were sporadic attempts to reach Megan via phone, including a text sent from her phone on December 7, 2015, it remains unclear whether Megan herself sent these messages. Madden became a key figure in the investigation after he later became involved in violent criminal activities, including a deadly standoff in 2019, during which he killed his father and later died by suicide.
