On a cold December day in 1991, 68-year-old Walter Gressley left his home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with the intention of washing his car. He was driving his 1988 burgundy Chevrolet Cavalier station wagon, a familiar sight in his neighborhood. The Indiana license plate on his vehicle read 2G4022. Mr. Gressley was dressed for the weather in a black jacket, blue pants, and a multicolored plaid shirt. A man who wore glasses and had gray hair and blue eyes, he was a recognizable figure.
