At the time of his disappearance, Michael had gone on a solo camping trip to the Nettle Springs and Apache Canyon area in the Los Padres National Forest. He had planned to stay at a friend’s cabin in the area. His vehicle was found days later in the vicinity of Nettle Springs, with his camping gear inside, suggesting he may have gone on a day hike but never returned.
Stephenson was known to be struggling with mental health issues and was described as suicidal at the time of his disappearance. He was a counselor at the Turning Point Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting people with mental illness. In addition to his mental health concerns, Michael was also diabetic and required daily insulin injections, which added urgency to the search.
