It was a spring day in Coos Bay, Oregon, on April 28, 2000, when 17-year-old Ryan K. Beauchamp was enjoying an outing with friends. The group was rock climbing near the mouth of Sunset Bay, a scenic but potentially treacherous coastal area. As they were climbing, a sudden and powerful sneaker wave surged from the ocean, tragically sweeping Ryan out to sea.
